The outpost designed within this project is a cohesive design of the first permanent habitat on Mars. Many groups, both governmental and now civilian, are striving towards sending humans to Mars. Estimates for when this might happen range from the mid 2020s to the end of the century. While the first visitors will not stay long, the eventual goal of many of these groups is to send humans to live permanently on our neighboring planet. This project attempts to answer some potential questions and solve expected issues not only through the traditional scientific mindset, but also through a design oriented approach. The main focus throughout my thesis, from the paper to this project, is on designing for the extreme psychological, sociological, and geometric issues inherent in this undertaking. Answering some of these questions with a heuristic design approach, within the framework of certain scientifically determined parameters, creates a realistic design approach that can further the conversation of how to successfully tackle such an imposing challenge.
